Orlando GFCI Outlets and Switches

GFCI Outlets & SwitchesA ground-fault circuit interrupter (or GFCI) is a device used to disconnect a circuit in the event of an imbalanced current between a charged conductor and a neutral return conductor. Basically, they prevent accidental electrocution, and codes often require them in bathrooms, kitchen, laundry rooms, garages, and outdoor locations. However, GFCIs can’t work properly if they aren’t properly connected, and if your Orlando home hasn’t had its electrical system updated in the last ~20 years, there’s a good chance that you need to have GFCI outlets and switches installed in your home.

Solaris Technology has experienced, professional electricians who can help you determine whether you need GFCI outlets or switches installed in any part of your home. If we find places where they’re necessary, we can also handle the complete installation of these devices. Although there are DIY instructions available for this, we recommend—for your safety—that you do not attempt any work on your electrical system without proper training and extensive experience.

National Electric Codes and GFCIs

The National Electric Code (NEC) includes recommendation and requirements for GFCIs in some form since 1968. During the 70s, requirements for GFCI installations were gradually added for 120-volt receptacles in areas in which there is a high risk for water contact, like bathrooms and garages. In the 80s, kitchens and basements were required to have GFCIs installed, as well as other things like boat houses, commercial garages, and indoor pools.

During the 1990s, the requirements were expanded to include crawlspaces, wet bars, rooftops, elevator rooms, and car tops. By 1996, GFCIs were required for all temporary wiring for construction, remodeling, maintenance, repair, demolition, and similar projects.

Today’s NEC requires GFCIs for any rooms that may come into contact with any water. There are exceptions and specificities, as well as state and local codes. Our electricians can inspect your Orlando home thoroughly and make sure that your GFCI outlets are completely up to code.

Benefits of GFCIs

  • Shock Prevention – With built-in sensors that will block any dangerous flow of electricity to a grounded object or person, GFCI outlets and switches can protect you from electrical shocks, which could easily result in serious injury or even fatality.
  • Fire Prevention – Ground-faults are what cause electrical fires, and GFCIs are a great way to prevent them. GFCIs are one of the most basic fire prevention tools you can have installed in your home.
  • Appliance Damage Prevention – Refrigerators or washers and dryers can be damaged very easily and permanently by ground faults, but GFCIs can help you prevent that damage.
